Ndamukong Suh was trending over the weekend on Yahoo! for his hit on Jake Delhomme that garnered him a 7,500 dollar fine. As the second overall selection in this year’s NFL draft, there is every indication that the Detroit Lions’ brass made the right move. The franchise is building up its stable of high draft picks that are sure to make a major impact during the upcoming season including Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Jahvid Best.
By Patrick Herbert
At six feet four inches and over three hundred pounds, Suh still possesses stellar mobility with his uncanny lateral movement. He can also rush the quarterback simply by running over blockers and pushing them deep in the backfield. This should prove extremely beneficial in the 3-4 defense.
There is less of a learning curve at the defensive end position than some others in the NFL. Teams can waste millions of dollars on top picks while they sit on the bench and learn systems. The Cardinals would certainly like to have the Matt Leinart pick back. Just like in every interview scenario following a selection, I am sure they said he had a tremendous upside with a lot of potential.
He did, in a way.
There was potential to blow his time and money partying and playing beer pong. On the other extreme side when it comes to draft picks, Suh can step in and make an immediate impact on the field.
The 2006 draft produced Mario Williams as the first selection. This product of North Carolina State was not the popular choice for the fans of the Houston Texans. They wanted to see Reggie Bush in their uniform. He was the sexier pick because he was showcased at a powerhouse University and offensive players are usually in the spotlight more.
Williams turned out to be the better pick thus far. He is the team’s all-time leader in sacks with nearly forty and was arguably the best defensive lineman in 2007. This defensive end was a pro bowl player the last two seasons as well. This is evidence that Suh-as a defensive tackle- is the right choice for the Lions.
Matthew Stafford already possesses numerous weapons on the offensive side of the ball: Best, Burleson, and Calvin Johnson will make life easier with their play making ability. It is of the utmost importance to have fresh legs at the running back position. Fans have seen the precipitous decline of LaDanian Tomlinson’s production. That is why the Chargers feel comfortable moving forward with Ryan Matthews out of Fresno State. Burleson and Johnson provide opportunities for Stafford to pad his stats with their ability to gain yards after the catch.
Kyle Vanden Bosch, defensive end, will make Suh’s transition to Sundays easier. As a fellow alumnus of the University of Nebraska, he can take Suh under his wing and demonstrate the work ethic and routines that have made him a successful veteran. One thing is always certain for the Lions, Jason Hanson will be kicking the ball through the uprights. Another is a very probable outcome: Ndamukong Suh will be a very productive pro defensive lineman who is deserved of the second overall selection.

One unexpected roster casualty is Chauncey Washington, who performed well throughout camp and appeared to increase his worth with performances against the Panthers and Eagles in exhibition games. In contrast, Jets fourth-round pick, Joe McKnight, has been disappointing at best. From poor conditioning to an array of mental errors that brought a tongue lashing from his head coach, it would have been no surprise to see McKnight’s name scattered among others on the cutting room floor. It's not, as Washington absorbed the full impact of the falling axe.

The 2011 NFL Draft looks as if it can be another draft that is heavy on the Defensive side of the ball. The Chick-Fil-A kickoff game in Atlanta on September 4th (ABC) between North Carolina and LSU is going to make for a nice showcase on that talent.
When North Carolina is on Defense it will be hard to not catch one of the future NFL stars in on a play. Robert Quinn (DE), Bruce Carter (OLB), Deunta Williams (FS), Quan Sturdivant (ILB), and Kendric Burney (CB), are all possibilities to be taken in the early rounds of the next draft.
On the offensive side of the ball, Wide Receiver Greg Little is a potential high draft pick as well. In 2010 Little led the Tar Heels with 62 receptions, 724 yards and five touchdowns. At this time we see him as a possible second round or early third round pick.
The Tar Heals will be without star Defensive Tackle, Marvin Austin, due to his indefinite suspension. Austin chose not to enter the 2010 NFL Draft so he could return to North Carolina. While it is unknown how this will effect his 2011 NFL Draft stock, it certainly can’t help matters.
While not as overflown with talent, LSU boasts some future prospects as well. Patrick Peterson (CB), Terrence Toliver(WR), Kelvin Sheppard (ILB), and Drake Nevis (DT) give a peek as to some of the names we will be hearing leading up to the draft in April.
For our fantasy football readers, this game can be candy to the eyes if you play in Dynasty leagues, especially if it uses Individual Defensive Players.

Matt Leinart has become another example of collegiate success failing to transition to the next level. Regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks in college football history, after posting a career record of 37-2 at USC, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner now finds himself being dangled as trade bait.

The Counselor is IN:
Before Draft day, there is much preparation to be done. Here is a list of the things to examine. Most of them are related to your cheat-sheets. Your cheat-sheets should be the results of your hard work. It is also important to know your league.1) Know your league rules and scoringThis may appear obvious but many of the owners do not fully grasp the rules and scoring of their league. They may not know that Tight Ends get a 5 point bonus if they have over 5 catches per game or that interceptions are minus 2 points. Owners need to know how to pick up players for injuries and if their league has injured list spots or does the league have a waiver wire. You need to know all of the rules and how they will affect your team and what kind of backups you need to draft.2) Customize your cheat-sheetsI will update and re-post the article from last season about why you need to customize and how to customize your cheat-sheets. In a nutshell, you need cheat-sheets which are specialized to your league and your preferences. Stay tune and the article will be posted in the next couple of days.3) Overall and Positions with your cheat-sheetsIt is important that your cheat-sheets should have an overall rankings of the players especially at the beginning of the draft. Equally important is the rankings of each position on your cheat-sheets. This allows you to easily find the best wide receiver left on the board, according to your rankings. During the draft, you usually have less than a minute to pick your next selection so you need quick access to your lists.4) Tier your cheat-sheetsAlong with the customizing the rankings, you need to Tier your lists. Tiers work by grouping players together that are comparable. You want to Tier the position rankings. It is not as important to Tier the over all list but some people find it helpful. The advantage of using Tiers give you a visual on the level of that position players left and will assist you in deciding when to draft a player.5) Other important information on your cheat-sheetIt may be important to include other informaiton on your lists. The off weeks for the player is very important because you do not want to draft your top three running backs with the same off week. There may be other important infomation to include depending on your needs and your league. 6) Fantasy Mock DraftNothing prepares you for an event like practice. Fantasy Mock Drafts are your practice before Draft Day. There are a ton of sights that have mock drafts set up such as ESPN.com and NFL.com. Most allow you to pick your draft position so if you know your draft position ahead of time then you can practice from that position numerous times. Do not expect your draft to go just like the Fantasy Mock Drafts because it won’t but it should give you an idea of where players are going in the draft. Face to Face drafts are much less likely go like a mock draft than an online draft.7) Understand the tendencies of your league OwnersIf you are in a reoccurring league, you can examine the draft tendencies of the owners over the seasons. Most of us are creatures of habits. Most will use similar draft strategies from year to year. 8) Know your own tendenciesIf you know the tendencies of your fellow league owners, some of them are likely to know your tendencies. It is important to be aware of your tendencies and if you are tipping your next pick. When possible during the draft, it is good to occasionally change up slightly to cause confusion to your opponents but don’t do something crazy just to do it, like drafting a kicker in the first round. The Counselor is OUT:

It’s hard to come by great rookie performances that someday wind up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and better yet to see the NFL’s Rookie of the Year to find his way to Canton.
In 42 years of old school muddy fields to the new age of turf, the Associated Press has been voting Rookies of the Year to the NFL.
Since 1967, the Associated Press has given out two annual Rookie of the Year Awards to NFL American football players: one for an offensive player and one for a defensive player. These two are often regarded as the "official" Rookie of the Year Awards.
A number of players could be on this list some day. Guys like Marshall Faulk, Charles Woodson, maybe Leslie O’Neal, Jerome Bettis, Curtis Martin, Randy Moss, and Brian Urlacher. Some of the early birds may include guys like Patrick Willis, Julius Peppers, and Adrian Peterson.
Robert Brazile, one of the all-time great pass-rushing linebackers to play is the only linebacker from the 1970s All-Decade Team not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is considered to be the one who first made the 3-4 popular for sending an outside linebacker to rush the quarterback.
Here are some quick hits for you on the history of the Rookies of the Year.
Players from the University of Miami have won the award the most times (six): Chuck Foreman, Ottis Anderson, Eddie Brown, Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis, and Jonathan Vilma.
The Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers have both won a total of six Rookie of the Year awards. Detroit has won four Offensive ROTYs and two Defensive ROTYs; Pittsburgh has three of each.
Running backs have won 30 out of 43 Offensive ROTY awards or 70%, and linebackers have won half of the Defensive ROTY awards (21 out of 42).
Time will only tell which ex-NFL Offensive/Defensive Rookie of the Year will make it into the Hall of Fame.
Here is a look at the 13 NFL Rookies of the Year who have found their way into the Hall of Fame.
